Ecobalance: Do more roads help against climate change?

CO₂ emissions in traffic are constantly increasing. Politicians say: This is also because there are so many traffic jams. Would more roads contribute to climate protection? We did the math.

The traffic light coalition is arguing about how much tax money should flow into road construction in the future. Disciples of the universally free ride argue: More lanes and new route sections would avoid traffic jams – and thus unnecessary CO₂ emissions. Ecologically sensitive skeptics counter that any expansion, especially on freeways, automatically leads to more traffic – which must be avoided with regard to the climate.
