So far, small series manufacturer Vanderhall has made a name for itself in particular with its emotional tricycles such as Venice and Carmel. Now the Americans are stepping up – with an electrically powered four-wheel drive off-road vehicle.

The bonds are unmistakable: The new Vanderhall Brawley can hardly hide a certain similarity to one or the other Jeep model and that is not only due to the round headlights and louvred radiator grille. But because the four electrically driven studded tires are located at the corners of the climbing maxi and the aprons are pulled far up, the Brawley looks like a bulky bathtub when it presses through woods and steppe.

With a length of just 3.75 meters, the two-door from the USA offers space for up to four occupants inside. The drive is provided by four individually controlled electric motors on the front and rear axles, which together generate 295 kW or 404 hp and a maximum torque of 690 Nm. The customer can choose between two battery packs with 40 and 60 kWh, which, installed in the middle of the vehicle, should enable ranges of up to 320 kilometers until the next charging stop. With the optional fast charging system, the large battery pack can be strengthened to 80 percent in just under an hour.

Four off-road modes make the Brawley a climber and digger

For tough off-road use, the cabin can be completely sealed against dust and sand. In the interior there are four heated individual seats, air conditioning and a decidedly puristic cockpit without airbags. Instead of the large displays that are now common, the electric model offers two large and one small round clock behind the handy leather steering wheel. Otherwise, the occupants look alone at a narrow battery of switches in the middle of the dashboard as well as the storage and glove compartment. The wheelbase: 2.86 meters – remarkable for an off-roader only 3.75 meters long. If desired, the roof can be removed with just a few movements or a tent can be fitted – this effectively turns the Brawley into an off-road camper, where no Bulli can get there. On request, the Brawley can be equipped with windshield wipers, heating, air conditioning or a sound system, but if you want you can get a minimal package without any comfort and puristic all-wheel enjoyment in the field.

Especially off the beaten track, there is no stopping the Brawley, because the up to 35-inch studded tires limit the length of the unusual electric vehicle to the front and back without any further overhang. Its suspension travel is enormous at 56 centimeters, whereby the pilot at the wheel can choose between the four off-road modes Ecrab, Esteer, Etank and Ecrawl up to a speed of 15 km / h, depending on the surface. The all-wheel drive vehicle can easily move sideways like a crab or climb and circle compactly in hard terrain. Particularly spectacular, however, is the so-called Etank mode, in which the wheels on the left and right side of the vehicle rotate in opposite directions like the chains on a tank and can thus be rotated almost on the spot. Helpful when studded tires, bypass shock absorbers and ground clearance of 46 centimeters should not be enough to get you further. In the USA, prices for the Vanderhall Brawley currently start at 34,950 US dollars. Reservations are accepted for as little as $ 100.
