DWD analysis: summer was too wet and too warm

Status: 08/30/2021 1:55 p.m.

After three years with particularly dry summers, the months June to August were far too wet this time. The heavy rain in July in particular contributed to this. The summer was still too warm this year.

According to a preliminary assessment by the German Weather Service (DWD), this year’s summer was the rainiest in ten years. This was announced by the DWD after the first evaluations of the results of its around 2000 measuring stations.

The extreme rains from Tief “Bernd” in mid-July in North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate, which triggered the devastating floods with more than 180 deaths, played a major role in this. In addition, the bottom line was that the months of June, July and August 2021 were too warm and sunny on average.

30 percent more rain

In the summer of 2021, an average of around 310 liters per square meter fell nationwide – at 30 percent, almost a third more than the average for the reference period from 1961 to 1990. This ended the three-year period of excessively dry summer. According to the information, the average temperature was 17.9 degrees, 1.6 degrees more than the value from the internationally valid reference period from 1961 to 1990. Compared to the warmer years 1991 to 2020, the deviation was plus 0.3 Degree.

The weather service recalled the almost forgotten heat wave in mid-June with values above 35 degrees in view of the currently comparatively cool temperatures. With around 615 hours of sunshine, the summer met its target of 614 hours.
