Dutch speleologist dies while diving in underground gallery

A speleologist of Dutch origin died on Sunday in the Lot during a caving trip. This man in his sixties was in Marcilhac-sur-Célé, in the Ressel cavity which provides access to a network of underground galleries flooded when the accident took place according to The Dispatch.

It was his teammate who gave the alert at the start of the afternoon. The firefighters could only note his death when they arrived on the spot. According to the regional daily, the origin of the accident could be explained by a failure of its equipment, when it was already more than 50 meters underground. Since then, specialized teams have been on site to bring the body to the surface, the access conditions being complicated. An investigation was opened and entrusted to the Lot gendarmerie.
