Due to the Ukraine war: the Dusseldorf Rose Monday procession was cancelled

Status: 04/05/2022 10:29 am

The Shrove Monday parade in Düsseldorf, which was postponed to May 29, will not take place. The responsible group of presidents unanimously decided to cancel on Monday – because of “the armed conflicts in Ukraine and the associated suffering”.

In view of the suffering for millions of people, the planned traditional parade will not be carried out, the Düsseldorf Carneval Committee confirmed on Monday. The decision was reached after a lively discussion. No one agreed to schedule the move with a war in the Ukraine expected.

Traditional train still up to date?

Another criterion mentioned by CC President Michael Laumen was the recent refusal by WDR to broadcast the move live. This resulted in lost revenue. In addition, the city had expressed concerns about holding the event, according to the President of the Düsseldorf Carneval Committee (CC), Michael Laumen. They now want to discuss “whether the traditional procession is still up-to-date at all or whether the CC might be able to show public presence and responsibility in a different way on May 29,” the statement said.

In addition, the city of Düsseldorf has recently expressed concerns about holding the event, according to Laumen. The idea of alternative events such as a demonstration parade was also rejected.

“Evaluate circumstances independently in the future”

With regard to the upcoming session, Laumen announced that he no longer wanted to be automatically guided by external recommendations. “In the future, we will evaluate the circumstances independently and only cancel or postpone events that are prohibited by law,” said Laumen. “We owe that to our clubs and the population.”

We reported on this topic in the WDR radio news on April 5, 2022.
