Due to ice and snow, school transport will be suspended, schools, middle schools and high schools closed this Wednesday in Yonne

Due to the cold spell which has been sweeping the department for 24 hours and degraded traffic conditions on the roads of Yonne, the prefect issued, this Tuesday January 9, 2024, an order prohibiting the circulation of school transport on Wednesday January 10 January for the entire territory. The measure is accompanied by an obligation to close all schools usually welcoming students on Wednesdays.

The decision was taken late this Tuesday, January 9, 2024, but it follows the traffic conditions which continued to deteriorate throughout the evening on the roads of Yonne due to snow and ice .

Recalling that the Yonne department is maintained, by Météo France, on yellow “snow and ice” vigilance on Wednesday January 10 during the day and noting that “these weather conditions are causing difficult traffic this evening for road users due to of frost and ice”, the prefect of Yonne, Pascal Jan, calls on the Icaunais “to limit their movements to what is strictly necessary” throughout the day.

The cold spell is expected to persist until January 14

As a preventive measure and in order to limit traffic on all roads in the department, the prefect has decided to “close schools which would be open this Wednesday January 10 and therefore suspend school transport for the day”.

The press release from the prefecture specifies that “support is maintained for boarding students who remain in the establishments”. And that “the maintenance of the collective reception of minors organized by local authorities (leisure centers) is left to the free appreciation of the latter, in particular with regard to the state of their road network”.

Several routes difficult to pass due to snow in Yonne

According to Météo France forecasts, temperatures should remain close to 0°C until Sunday, with the return of dry and sunny weather from Thursday afternoon.
