In the first part of the documentary “Harry & Meghan” Duchess Meghan reports how much she had to learn when she came into the British royal family.
Part one of the Netflix documentary “Harry & Meghan” was released this Thursday. In it, Duchess Meghan (41) and Prince Harry (38) report about their meeting in 2016, the subsequent constant escape from the paparazzi and the way to the royal wedding in May 2018. Among other things, Meghan also talks about the first Christmas with the royal Sandringham family. “This is the extended family I always wanted,” she recalls, looking back at her thoughts at the time. “It was very lively, boisterous and fun.”
Meghan also describes what it was like to be in public with the royals after the engagement in 2017: “There are no classes,” she says. “I had to learn a lot, including the national anthem,” said the American. You googled this. “And then I practiced them over and over again.”
“Don’t Stand Out”
In addition, she says in retrospect in the documentary that she rarely wore anything colorful in Great Britain. “There was a reason for that. As far as I know, you can never wear the same color as other senior members of the royal family at a public event. So I thought, what color will they never wear…” She added: “So decided I prefer muted tones, also to avoid attracting attention.” She “definitely didn’t want to stand out” and tried everything “that I can somehow fit into this family and not embarrass them”.
About the aggressive reporting in the press and threats, Meghan explained: “Behind the scenes, I withdrew more and more.” The scandal surrounding paparazzi photos of Meghan’s father Thomas Markle (78) and his cancellation shortly before the wedding are also topics in the documentary: “I found out that he wasn’t coming to our wedding from the gossip press.” After Thomas Markle’s heart attack was reported, she called “non-stop”. Without success. Harry explained: “It was incredibly sad, suddenly she didn’t have a father anymore. I blamed myself for that. Because if Meg hadn’t been with me, her dad would still be her dad.”
Part two of the documentary will be released on Netflix next Thursday (December 15). Probably with the details of the royal wedding up to Meghan and Harry’s departure from the royal family in early 2020.
