Queen Elizabeth II had canceled her participation in the celebrations at short notice. She was represented by her family, including Prince William and Duchess Kate – who turned heads.
Commonwealth Day was celebrated in the UK on Monday. The British royal family took part in the traditional memorial service in Westminster Abbey in London – but for the first time since 2013 without queen elizabeth II. The monarch had announced a few days ago that she would not be present at the event as originally planned.
Reasons were not given, but in the past few months the 95-year-old has repeatedly struggled with health problems and has just survived a corona infection. The Queen was officially represented at Commonwealth Day by her eldest son and heir to the throne Prince Charleswho came with his wife Camilla.
Duchess Kate goes for colour
Even Prince William and Duchess Kate attended the service. And the mother of three in particular drew everyone’s attention. Kate chose an all-royal blue outfit for the event, which made her smile.

The 40-year-old combined a color-coordinated hat with a long, elegant coat by Catherine Walker. Matching heels and a clutch complete the tasteful look. The Brits present in front of Westminster Abbey cheered Kate.
Queen Elizabeth shares message ‘in difficult times’
Nevertheless, Queen Elizabeth was of course sorely missed by her people. However, the monarch did not miss the opportunity to address the public with a personal message. “In this year of my Platinum Jubilee, it gives me pleasure to renew the promise I made in 1947,” said the Queen, referring to giving her life to the service of the Commonwealth.
Today it is worth observing “a modern, vibrant and connected Commonwealth that combines a wealth of history and tradition with the great social, cultural and technological advances of our time”. The size of the Commonwealth is a credit to all concerned.
The “Family of Nations” offers connections, cooperation and friendship. “In these difficult times, I hope you will find strength and inspiration in what we share as we work together towards a healthy, sustainable and prosperous future for all,” said Queen Elizabeth II.
