Duchess Kate will be the first member of the royal family to assume one of Prince Harry’s patronages.

Duchess Kate (40) is the first member of the royal family to take over one of the patronages that Prince Harry (37) had to give up as part of the Megxit. She becomes the new patron of the English Rugby Football Union (RFU). The personnel is to be made official shortly, like the British “Daily Mail” reports in advance, citing unnamed sources. As early as August, the newspaper reported on the Queen’s plans, citing “The Times”.

This means that Duchess Kate could compete directly with her husband, Prince William (39), at this year’s championship next week. Because he has been the patron of the Welsh rugby union since 2016. Both teams will play each other in Twickenham, London on February 26, with both William and Kate supporting their respective sides.

Already royal patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, sporty Kate has cheered for England’s rugby stars at Twickenham.

Prince Harry took over from the Queen

Prince Harry was forced to step down from his post as patron of the RFU last year after he and his wife, Duchess Meghan, 40, gave up royal life and moved to California.

The rugby-loving royal, who celebrated the 2003 World Cup victory in Australia with the English team, has been a patron since 2016. He took over the role from his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II (95), after having been her vice president since 2010.

In February last year, Buckingham Palace released a statement announcing the Queen’s decision to relieve Harry and Meghan of their honorary patronages. The palace confirmed that the “honorary military offices and royal patronages held by the Duke and Duchess will be returned to Her Majesty before being redistributed among working members of the Royal Family”.

To date, no member of the royal family has received any of the Sussexes’ patronages. But in view of the championship taking place next week, the reassignment of the post had become urgent.
