Dubai far from all artificiality – our author found it for a moment

Is there an authentic, original Dubai? An hour’s drive from the glittering city, our author discovers the desert near Saih as-Salam.

There I am standing in this glittering world, where the facades of high-rise buildings reflect the sun while their attics disappear into the clouds. Where expensive cars drive on wide streets and huge banners advertise luxury watches. And where half-naked influencers pose for the next reel, while women in hijabs hold a scent ceremony or prepare for evening prayers. Even the picturesque palm gardens and refreshing waters in Dubai are artificial.

Is there an authentic, original Dubai? To find out, I drive an hour out of the city of superlatives. In the foothills of the Rub al-Khali desert, in the Al Marmoom Reserve. The nature reserve near Saih as-Salam, a habitat for camels, gazelles and desert dogs, extends over 400,000 square meters and accounts for around ten percent of the total area of the Emirate of Dubai. Hoping for some authenticity, I book a guided desert tour. And experience a big show.
