“Dub Conference”: Helmut Phillip reads in the Optimal record shop – Munich

Dub sounds simple, but it is highly complex. The Jamaican sound revolution isn’t just a musical style, it’s a cultural technique: Sound engineers dissect reggae, send the parts through echo chambers and reassemble them via the deep bass. This approach influenced chart and club music, indeed all contemporary music including classical music, says Helmut Philipps. The author has authored the book “Dub Conference” (Strzelecki Books) on “50 Years of Dub from Jamaica”. The sound engineer (among others for Götz Alsmann) was one of the first Germans to deal with dub, founded the first German reggae label (T’Bwana Sound) and writes for many music magazines. Interviews with dub legends like Scientist, Alborosie, King Tubby, Lee Perry and Mad Professor form the basis of this standard work, from which he is now reading in the Optimal record store.

“Dub Conference”, reading, Thursday, March 9th, 8.30 p.m., Optimal Records, Kolosseumstr. 6
