The American blues drummer and singer Sammy Lay is dead. According to his record company, he died at the age of 86 in a nursing home in Chicago. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1935, Lay began his career as a drummer for the Original Thunderbirds. A short time later he accompanied the harmonica player Little Walter and became a permanent member of Muddy Waters’ band in 1960, for whom he later played, among other things, on his album “Fathers and Sons”. He subsequently accompanied Bob Dylan, Willie Dixon, Howlin’ Wolf, Eddie Taylor, John Lee Hooker and Bo Diddley, among others. In 2015, Lay was recognized as a member of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame.
