At 11.31 a.m., half a day later than planned, Albert Deppisch steered his 187 meter long barge under the Friedrich-Ebert Bridge in Duisburg. The skipper is making slow progress with the “Tilo Deymann” these days. The fairway of the Rhine has become narrow, oncoming traffic squeezes past his ship. In some places, boulders appear unexpectedly, he has to maneuver carefully. Deppisch, 68, says: “It’s pretty dangerous.”
