With his threat of a driving ban, Transport Minister Volker Wissing has stung a hornet’s nest. The Green MP Stefan Gelbhaar also opposes the FDP members star hard on.

The green transport politician Stefan Gelbhaar throws out the Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) presented “dangerous disinformation”. “Even the judicial obligation to finally present a proper climate protection program includes zero obligation to impose driving bans,” said the Green Bundestag member star.

In a letter to the parliamentary group leaders of the traffic light factions, the transport minister called for a rapid reform of the climate protection law, otherwise there would be a risk of weekend driving bans. The liberal hopes above all for an end to the so-called sector goals.

Stefan Gelbhaar: Volker Wissing’s driving ban threat is very wrong”

Gelbhaar is now criticizing the fact that in the past the ministry has repeatedly claimed, contrary to the opinion of expert committees, that the climate goals can also be achieved with “on-board resources, basically just like that and without a real program”. The fact that the transport minister is now threatening driving bans is “very wrong”.

Many studies have shown that “climate protection in transport is possible – and sensible,” said Gelbhaar. Effective climate protection measures against excessive emissions in the transport sector have been “on the table in large numbers and for a long time”. The Greens included the expansion of buses, trains and bicycles, the promotion of e-mobility, charging infrastructure and car sharing and the restructuring of company car taxation.

Only the parliamentary process would show when and what changes would come to the Climate Protection Act. “Letters change that: nothing.”
