Max Eberl is currently nothing to envy. FC Bayern’s sports director has had his dream job since March 1st, but his duties at the record champions are unlikely to bring him sweet dreams.

The 50-year-old must present a new coach for FCB as quickly as possible – if he has his way, in April. The problem: Either the candidates are committed to their current clubs, are not available for other reasons, prefer to be national coach or already have a problematic Bayern past behind them.

Eberl positions himself

In addition, Eberl has to find his way in the complicated power structure between Tegernsee, Grünwald and Säbener Straße and avoid mistakes. Again and again he finds himself in the situation of having to publicly work on the construction sites that others have opened.

But the sports director has managed to do this very well so far. Eberl says clever things and at the same time refrains from saying unwise things. He stands his ground.

Eberl appears strongly in the media

Best example: His interview on Sky on Saturday evening. It was Eberl’s first appearance after Julian Nagelsmann announced that he would remain national coach. Numerous experts and fans rated this as a clear rejection of FCB. In some cases there was even talk of a resounding slap in the face for the people of Munich.

But the sports director quickly managed to give the issue a positive spin for Bayern. “We spoke to Julian. At some point you realized that the sting from back then was still deep, the separation was too recent,” said Eberl and added: “I wouldn’t call it a rejection, he decided on the DFB. I’m happy for German football.”

Within a very short time, the Bayern boss was able to turn the tide somewhat. In a nutshell, one could understand his message as follows: Nagelsmann cannot professionally push aside old wounds and is therefore afraid of a new commitment to Säbener Strasse. SPORT1-According to information, the national coach sees this statement as a minor foul.

Conversely, Eberl may not have liked the fact that Nagelsmann’s agent Volker Struth announced in the “Spielmacher” podcast that there were negotiations between his client and Bayern.

The fact that this was announced immediately after the final whistle of the record champions’ game against Arsenal gave Eberl and the other FCB officials no lead time to prepare for the reporters’ questions. The fact that the sports director remained relaxed helped the club’s public perception.

Eberl is valued in the club

The club is enthusiastic about Eberl’s media work. The 50-year-old regularly takes pressure off the kettle and increases the number of strokes if necessary. The fact that after the embarrassment in Heidenheim he said that he was currently “not giving a damn” about the coaching search caused some observers astonishment, but the club found it right and good.

It just remains to be seen how Eberl positions himself between the various forces behind the scenes. Together with sports director Christoph Freund, he was an advocate of signing Nagelsmann and had the blessing of club patron Uli Hoeneß. Ultimately, however, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge prevailed as the head of the critics of such a return campaign.

But Eberl didn’t leave the field as a loser. When looking for a coach, everyone in the club continues to rely on his expertise and nose. He is responsible for finding a suitable coach.

Eberl currently remains Bayern’s most important man. He is in demand on all fronts, because as soon as he has found a coach, the squad restructuring will enter the decisive phase…
