Draw against Stuttgart – Burke saves Werder a point – Sport

Werder Bremen missed the hoped-for victory for the Bundesliga return to the Weser Stadium – but at least saved a point in added time. Thanks to a goal by Oliver Burke (90+5), the newly promoted team managed to win 2-2 (1-1) against VfB Stuttgart in their first home game in the premier league in 448 days. Like the Swabians, it was the second draw in the second game for coach Ole Werner’s team.

Jubilee Niclas Füllkrug gave Bremen the lead in the 4th minute with a powerful header from eleven meters into the top corner. But VfB captain Wataru Endo equalized before the break (38′). Silas Katompa Mvumpa initially turned the game in favor of the Swabians (77′) before Burke scored the final score.

The 41,000 spectators in the sold-out Weser Stadium saw a fast-paced Bundesliga game. Werder started like the fire brigade and could have led even more clearly after a powerful initial phase. Above all, Füllkrug, who had already scored in Wolfsburg (2-2), was initially a constant source of unrest in his 100th Bundesliga game. After the early opening goal, the 29-year-old hit the crossbar with a powerful shot from the edge of the penalty area (10th) – but then Werder’s glory was over for the time being.

Because the Werner team became increasingly passive after a strong initial phase, the equalizer was logical. In the 32nd minute, Werder keeper Jiri Pavlenka was able to parry an Endo long-range shot before the Japanese was successful six minutes later from an almost identical position. Endo’s powerful shot hit the top left.

In the second round, VfB was even more present. Coach Pellegrino Matarazzo’s team improved in the duels in particular and became more focused in their offensive actions. When Tiago Tomas (55th) suddenly appeared free in front of Pavlenka and failed at the Werder goalkeeper from a tight angle, the VfB supporters already had the goal scream on their lips. On the other side, Marvin Ducksch flicked the ball just over it from 16 meters (69′) before Silas scored for Stuttgart. But Burke provided a counter.
