A squirrel in Dortmund probably underestimated its own winter fat: It got stuck in a manhole cover. The fire brigade was able to successfully complete the operation.

A squirrel got stuck in a manhole cover in Dortmund on Easter Monday – and was rescued by the fire brigade. A walker had noticed the rodent in distress. During the Easter walk, the woman saw how it looked out of the manhole cover, the fire brigade said. “It got stuck and didn’t move forward or back.” The passer-by tried to get the animal out of the lid – but all attempts failed. The squirrel was very excited and tried to bite the rescuer in a panic, according to the fire department.

The woman finally covered the animal with a scarf – so it could calm down – and called the fire brigade, which freed a squirrel from the same situation four years ago.

The emergency services lifted the manhole cover and carefully tried to free the frightened rodent from the hole. But that wasn’t easy either. The animal “didn’t show itself to be cooperative”. Finally, according to the fire department, the rescue was successful. “The uninjured squirrel disappeared straight up the nearest tree.”
