Some donate money, buy hygiene items or food. Others sort donations in kind for aid organizations, drive miles to help provide for refugees or take them into their own homes. Millions of Germans are currently doing their best for the many people in need of the Ukraine war. But only very few helpers know that the state also rewards a lot of commitment financially, as Christina Georgiadis, spokeswoman for the United Income Tax Aid (VLH), explains. Those who are there for others in need can save on taxes. Monetary donations, invested leisure time or the used television for the refugee accommodation are tax deductible.
