No matter how massive the allegations against Donald Trump may be, the US Republicans stand almost unanimously behind the ex-president, and his critics are sorted out. This leads to a drastic expert judgement.

Whatever Donald Trump does, whatever he is accused of – whether it is endangering national security, violating the rights of espionage or instigating a coup d’etat – the US Republicans follow “their” Donald. But especially after the FBI investigations against the ex-president that became public, political observers and journalists are increasingly critical of this almost blind following in the “Grand Old Party”.

“I agree. And I was the CIA Director”

The “Financial Times” journalist Edward Luce also finds clear words. “Throughout my career I have covered extremism and violent ideologies around the world,” he tweeted last week. “Never have I encountered a political force more nihilistic, dangerous and despicable than today’s Republicans. Not even close.”

That alone would not be big news. But on Thursday, the tweet found a celebrity supporter. A certain Michael Hayden shared the tweet with the comment, “I agree. And I was the CIA director.”

Ex-CIA boss thinks Trump and Republicans are ‘dangerous’

Michael Hayden, former 4-star general in the US Air Force, initially headed the National Security Agency (NSA) for six years (1999-2005). He was then nominated by then-US President George W. Bush – a Republican – as director of the CIA, which he headed from 2006 to 2009.

The tweet was not the first kind of criticism, which Hayden fired at Donald Trump and his loyal Republican following. In the 2020 presidential election, Hayden publicly endorsed Joe Biden and described Trump as a man “who doesn’t care about facts”.

Since then he has been working on the ex-president and his MAGA supporters (“Make America Great Again”) on social media. Just last week he shared a meme on Twitter, which shows Trump holding a signed decree up to the camera. It reads, “I’m going to burn the country down to save my own butt. Believe me.”
