The term K-pop once referred to super-soft girl and boy bands from South Korea who, to the great astonishment of many Westerners, had cracked the cultural codes of the global market. We now see its dark underbelly more often, in films like “Burning” and “Parasite,” the Netflix series “Squid Game,” or in the strangely stark feminist books by authors like Han Kang, Cho Nam-Joo and, most recently, Bora Chung .
