Domenico Tedesco is the new trainer at RB Leipzig. Several media reports unanimously. The success against Manchester City under interim coach Beierlorzer and the commitment of the ex-Schalke could be the start of better times.

The only thing missing is the signature. As several German media report unanimously, the former Schalke coach Domenico Tedesco is to become the new coach at RB Leipzig. Thanks to the interim solution Achim Beierlorzer, the 36-year-old should then play with RB in the Europa League next year. After a victory in the last Champions League group game against Manchester City, Leipzig managed to qualify with third place to continue playing internationally. Tedesco could already make his debut on the RB coaching bench in the game against Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday (3.30 p.m. / Sky).

First, the TV broadcaster Sky Sport News HD reported on Wednesday that Tedesco was about to sign with the Saxon first division club. There was initially no confirmation. “We are working on a solution,” said Florian Scholz, Commercial Director of Sports at RB, when asked by the dpa.

Tedesco was at Spartak Moscow until May

Club boss Oliver Mintzlaff had already indicated an imminent decision on Tuesday evening on the edge of the 2-1 victory over Manchester City in the Champions League. “We have a very good feeling that the coach that we want to hire and will be a perfect fit for the team,” said Mintzlaff at the internet provider DAZN.

Tedesco, who is to follow the Jesse March, who was on leave on Sunday, had recently trained Spartak Moscow until May. As head coach, he had already worked for the second division club FC Erzgebirge Aue and the former Bundesliga club FC Schalke 04.

On Tuesday evening, Tedesco should have followed the appearance in the RB success against City closely. Small but effective tactical gimmicks brought the crisis-ridden runner-up short-term success and secured the winter in the Europa League. But does the team also work with the new coach in everyday life in the league?

Beierlorzer changed tactics

The Leipziger recently suffered three defeats in a row and after separating from Marsch they have “an obligation”, emphasized Mintzlaff. Tedesco, who recently paused for a few months, is like Julian Nagelsmann as a tactics specialist and demands discipline from the players.

The RB team now wants to “pick up where we left off,” said Konrad Laimer. “We are currently in an unfamiliar situation. We still have to find consistency and want to end the year on a positive note in the last three games.”

Interim coach Beierlorzer had changed tactics against City and with it success. At the back, the defense, which had been switched from a back three to a back four, radiated security. The experienced Laimer and Kevin Kampl disrupted the English champions’ structure of the game and at the front he relied on a creative three-way chain with a playmaker trio. “The team has shown that they have an incredible quality with and against the ball. That’s exactly where we have to continue,” said Beierlorzer.

By reaching the Europa League, RB received another title chance in addition to the DFB Cup. “It’s a chance to win a title,” said Kampl. Mintzlaff is also toying with added value. “We have a broad squad that has a lot of quality and is designed for three competitions,” said the RB boss.
