Dogs tilt their heads to one side and most people melt away.
It is typical behavior that the four-legged friends lay their head to one side – especially when they hear the voice of a familiar person
But what does it mean?
Researchers at the Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest studied how gifted dogs remember words.
The scientists noticed that the gifted animals differed from the less talented:
They tilted their heads to one side as soon as they received an order.
Animal scientist Andrea Sommese and his team then continued research:
They examined the frequency and direction of head tilt and the reaction to human utterances.
The owners asked their pups to fetch a specific toy from another room after being asked what the toy was called.
For example, the sentence: “Bring rope!”
The result: especially the dogs, which could remember a toy well, bowed their head after the execution of the command.
Gifted dogs tilted their heads in 43 percent of the cases, normal dogs only in two percent.
The Hungarian researchers explain this:
The dog’s head tilt is a sign of a high level of attention or concentration.
The animal seems to match a term or name with a visual image in its head.
The four-legged friend creates a connection between the task and its visual memory.
Whether the dog tilts its head to the right or left depends on its individual preference.
The animals always seem to tilt their heads in the same direction regardless of where the owner is.
So in the future it will be important to train properly so that the sweet head tilt occurs even more often.
