In this four-part miniseries, which takes a fresh and detailed look at the famous case of Jens Söring, the key player is the time that has passed since the murders in 1985. At that time, the detection of DNA traces was not yet commonplace and there were no surveillance cameras in the hotel. The entire existence was not yet digitized, i.e. recorded. This historicization of the event intensifies the mystery: today one would be able to get clarity within hours about the presence or absence of the people involved or accused, but because things were different back then, objective fact-finding is replaced by the audience’s judgment. The miniseries becomes an ethnographic expedition into an analogue past in which people could drive all over the USA for days without leaving any clear traces. But what sounds plausible? What will it have been like? Like no other criminal case, the Virginia double murder challenges the audience’s imagination and judgment, because there are still two competing stories, two versions of the crime, and only one of them can be true.
