In the US alone, the superhero sequel made $185 million. The film with Benedict Cumberbatch (45) in the leading role has had the best theatrical release of 2022 so far. “The Batman”, the previous leader from the competing DC universe, “only” fetched 134 million.

Second place behind Spider-Man

“Doctor Strange 2” is also the second most successful start since the beginning of the corona pandemic. Only in-house competitor “Spider-Man: No Way Home” grossed more ($260 million) on its debut in December 2021.

Globally, too, “Doctor Strange 2” ranks behind “Spider-Man” as the best restart of the Corona period. Overall, the sequel is the fourth strongest Marvel start, behind the last two “Avengers” films and Spidey.
