This is very bad news for DMX fans. The New York rapper was hospitalized Friday night after a heart attack, and was still in critical condition on Saturday, his lawyer Murray Richman said.
“He was hospitalized at 11 p.m. [vendredi] at the White Plains hospital ”, a city in the New York suburbs where he resides, after having“ a heart attack, ”said the man who has represented the rapper for 25 years. “As far as I know, he is still on life support,” added the lawyer, saying he was “very worried”.
TMZ talks about overdose
Murray Richman said he could not confirm information from the specialized site TMZ that the 50-year-old New York rapper, known to have had drug problems, overdosed. DMX had in particular done a detoxification in 2019, according to TMZ.
The rapper, real name Earl Simmons, had his heyday in the late 1990s and early 2000s, with hits like X Gon ‘Give It To Ya or Party Up. Author of eight albums, the last in 2015, DMX is one of hip-hop’s darkest figures, exposing his inner demons in hymns that have earned him both commercial and critical acclaim. His first big single, Get At Me Dog, starring Def Jam, was released in 1998, from their debut studio album, It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot. The album had climbed to No. 1 on the Billboard charts, with a second hit, Ruff Ryders’ Anthem, marking the beginning of a commercial success that will last for several years.
Conflicts with the law
Throughout his career, he was often in trouble with the law, with charges of possession of narcotics, cruelty to animals, dangerous driving, non-payment of alimony, or even posing as a federal agent. In November 2017, he pleaded guilty to tax evasion, admitting to having avoided paying $ 1.7 million in taxes. He was sentenced to one year in prison and returned some $ 2.3 million.
