DJI Mini 3: The 248 gram drone that shoots portrait video

The DJI Mini 3 weighs just 248 grams – but it should still record good photos and videos: the 1/1.3 sensor creates HDR videos in 4K and photos with 12 megapixels. However, videos with 60 frames per second are only possible with 2.7K, in 4K the device records 24, 25 or 30 fps. There is an HDR mode in both photo and video mode. Unusually with drones: The Mini 3 also records portrait videos on request, in which case the camera is physically rotated by 90 degrees.

The differences to the 250 euro more expensive DJI Mini 3 Pro (test on heise+) are manageable: The Pro version has a slightly higher sink rate (5 m/s instead of 3.5 m/s) and a slightly higher sensor light sensitivity (ISO 6400 instead of ISO 3200). In addition, the Pro drone can handle 60fps in 4K and photos with 48 megapixels. While the Mini 3 only sees the environment below, the Mini Pro also has front and rear vision sensors.

Due to the low weight, the DJI Mini 3 the drone regulations in many countries, where drones under 250 grams can be flown without registration or testing. In the EU, however, registration, a license plate and insurance are also required for the DJI Mini 3.

According to the manufacturer, the maximum speed of the new DJI drone is 16 meters per second, and the wind resistance is 10.7 m/s (wind force 5). According to DJI, the maximum hover time is 33 minutes, after which the battery must be changed. The Mini 3 Pro only achieves 30 minutes here.

The DJI Mini 3 “Fly More Combo” kit with RC-N1 remote control (without display), shoulder bag, charging station and three batteries is now available for 768 euros. With the DJI RC remote control (with display), the package costs 938 euros. If you only want a drone and the simplest remote control, you pay 579 euros, if you already have a DJI remote control, you can get the pure drone for 489 euros. From now on only the “Fly More” packages are available, according to DJI all other dosage forms will not come until the beginning of 2023.
