Diversity: why is diversity so controversial? – Society

When it comes to diversity, people diligently count and compare: Are there enough women, migrants, queers? It never really adds up, you never do justice to everyone. But fighting about it is the best thing that can happen to a society.

The opposite of diversity is perhaps the Catholic Church. For two thousand years only men have ruled there. Cardinals are appointed by the pope, the pope is elected by the cardinals, such a self-replicating system prevents any reform or progress. In a society almost as rigid, this guaranteed stability. But the more colourful, permeable and diverse the world around it becomes, the more the power of the church crumbles. Charles Darwin already knew why: “It is not the strongest species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the one that responds best to change.”
