Dispute over Tiktok: Beijing complains about American “gangster logic” – economy

Tiktok doesn’t exist in China. The app there is called Douyin. Like its foreign clone, Douyin is full of videos of dancers, animals, influencers who sometimes say more, sometimes less intelligent things. Sometimes there is even something critical of the government on the platform, as was the case on Wednesday: When a reporter from the state broadcaster CCTV wanted to report on an explosion that killed seven people in the small town of Sanhe near Beijing, she was taken away by the police while the camera was rolling. Videos of this immediately made the rounds on Douyin. Censors quickly restricted the distribution of the clips or deleted them.
