Netflix has been taking action against password free riders for a long time. Now Disney + is also following suit and wants to prevent accounts from being shared.

Disney+ wants to expand its customer base this year – by taking action against the sharing of passwords. Outside a shared household, you will have to pay for your own subscription from summer 2024. This is reported by the US industry magazine “Variety”.

Increase subscriber base

Later this year, Disney+ account holders who want to grant access to people outside of their household will then have the option to add them to their accounts for an additional fee. “We are still in the early stages,” explained Disney’s CFO Hugh Johnston (62) in a conference call with investors about the crackdown on password sharing, as “Variety” further reports. Johnston explained that the company only sees “significant benefits” from the initiative in the second half of the 2024 calendar year. “We want to reach as wide an audience as possible with our excellent content. And we look forward to introducing these new features to improve the overall customer experience and grow our subscriber base.”

Disney wants to be in the black with its streaming offering. The streaming service recently lost subscribers and is hoping for more customers, not least through the new initiative. Netflix has already achieved an increase in subscriber numbers through account sharing measures. However, there is always the risk that users will be annoyed by the change and switch to other providers.
