Many marinas were destroyed in the big Baltic Sea storm surge in autumn. Since then there has been a lot of cleaning and repairs. But can the damage be repaired in time for the start of the season?

During the severe storm surge in the Baltic Sea last autumn, many marinas and excursion destinations for water sports enthusiasts were destroyed. At the beginning of the new sailing season, not all damage has been repaired, as a random survey by the dpa at some ports showed. In some places there is minor damage that still needs to be repaired, while in other places the season doesn’t even start. Financial aid from the state has not yet been provided.

There is good news from the Kiel-Schilksee Olympic Port, which is also the location of the Kieler Woche. According to the information, the season can start here as planned on March 15th. All berths are available, there are only minor restrictions on water and electricity – especially in the southern part of the harbor. The im-jaich marinas will also begin operations without restrictions at the start of the sailing season. Im-jaich ports are located in Arnis an der Schlei, Langballigau and Flensburg, among others.

Meanwhile, sailors who want to head to Damper Harbor should look for an alternative this spring and summer. The damage is still clearly visible here at the beginning of March. Initially it was said that the port would remain completely closed all year round. However, the municipality would like to try to open at least some jetties over the course of the season.

The pilot island in the mouth of the mucus, which is popular with many water sports enthusiasts and day trippers, is still being tidied up and repaired these days. The port is officially closed until May 1st. It is hoped that somewhat normal port operations will then be guaranteed again. The Schleikiosk is scheduled to open, the popular Giftbude, a restaurant, will not operate in 2024.
