Sönke Wortmann played football professionally for a while after school. But he became known as a filmmaker. As such, he has an award in store.

Filmmaker Sönke Wortmann receives the honorary award at the Bavarian Film Awards this year.

“I’m a fan of his work. He inspires with football films as well as with comedies,” said Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) on Wednesday in Munich, referring to films like “The Miracle of Bern” or “Germany. A Summer’s Tale». In his work, Wortmann combines contemporary history and the emotions of sport and is also successful as a producer and novelist.

The 62-year-old director comes from the Ruhr area, from Marl, and played football professionally for a few years after graduating from high school. At the beginning of his film career, he was still in front of the camera himself – after all, he had proven his talent as a film producer and author, according to the announcement. The Bavarian Film Prize will be celebrated at a gala in Munich on May 20th. Söder will award the prize there, it said.
