Will Corsica soon be autonomous? The day after a summit meeting with the nationalists and the republican right of the island, Emmanuel Macron must deliver a highly anticipated speech on Thursday September 28 in the morning at the Corsican Assembly in Ajaccio, in front of elected officials. It must outline the possible evolution of the institutional status of the island. The nationalists, who control the Corsican Assembly, are demanding their own legislative power, Corsican resident status, co-officiality of the Corsican language and the inclusion of the notion of Corsican people in the Constitution. The president’s fifth visit to Corsica. The head of state carries out his fifth trip to the Isle of Beauty. It will thus close months of discussions between the government and political leaders regarding the status of the island.

The hope of Corsican elected officials. Jean-Félix Acquaviva, autonomist deputy for Haute-Corse from the party of Gilles Simeoni, president of the executive council of Corsica, spoke “a desire to converge to find sufficiently strong points of balance which allow us to say that tomorrow [jeudi] we will be in an important, even historic moment”.

A tribute to the Liberation. The Head of State will also pay tribute to the Corsican resistance on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Liberation (Corsica was the first French territory liberated, on October 4, 1943). The Head of State will pay tribute to the memory of Fred Scamaroni, a figure of the Corsican resistance, where he was detained and committed suicide on March 19, 1943, at the Citadel of Ajaccio. He will then go to Bastia and Bonifacio.
