This Monday, May 1, the unions are calling for a “massive” and “popular” mobilization for the traditional demonstration of the labor Day. A day that will be marked by a new opposition to the pension reform and more broadly against Emmanuel Macron and his policy.

In Lyon, the intelligence services are waiting for a strong mobilization with at least 15,000 participants compared to 4,000 last year.

10:20 am: the demonstrators still place Jean-Jaurès

Protesters continue to flock to Place Jean Jaurès in the 7th arrondissement of Lyon. The departure of the procession is still not given and is already half an hour late.

Following the damage caused on the showcases banks, insurance and real estate agencies, many brands have protected their storefronts with wood panels throughout the course of the event.

9:40 am: The police took up position near Bellecour

Law enforcement officers took up position in the area Bellecour in the 2nd arrondissement of Lyon, place of arrival and dispersion of the procession in a few hours. The start will be given shortly after 10 a.m., at the level of the Jean-Jaurès metro.

8 a.m.: Huge security device, drones used

The profile of the demonstrators should be quite broad, private sector employees to studentsand “in certain cities, specifies the note of the information, of the elements resulting from the protest movement (ultraleft, antifas, yellow vests). The Ministry of the Interior expects clashes and clashes in Lyon.

The Rhône prefecture has even planned to authorize the national police to use drone to “secure” the demonstration and “in order to maintain public order”. Justice has challenged two appeals filed by two associations, Syndicate of Lawyers of France (SAF) and the Independent National Body for the Control of the Executive (Onice).

The unions hope to extend the strong mobilization against the pension reform for this May 1st. The inter-union calls for “massive” participation. The intelligence services expect at least 15,000 people against 4,000 in 2022.

7:05 am: No TCL network this May 1

No metros, buses and trams this Monday in the metropolis of Lyon. The TCL network is completely shut down for May 1, as it is every year. There is no link with the mobilization day.

6:30 am: 30% of flights canceled at Lyon airport

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGAC) on Wednesday asked the largest French airports to cancel between 25 and 33% of flights on Monday. At the airport of Lyon Saint-Exuperya third of flights will be affected by cancellations due to the air traffic controllers’ strike.

6 a.m.: The course of the event, arrival at Bellecour

This year, like the previous 1st of May, the demonstrators have an appointment at 10 a.m. around the metro Jean-Jaures in the 7th arrondissement. The procession will set off to Place Bellecour, the place of arrival and dispersal.


The demonstrators will parade on Avenue Jean-Jaurès, pass by Place Jean-Macé to turn onto Cours Gambetta at the level of the Saxe-Gambetta metro, pass by Gabriel-Péri, on the Guillotière bridge to reach Place Antonin-Poncet via the Quai du Dr Gailleton to finally arrive at Place Bellecour.
