The EU has already sanctioned a number of people for the brutal suppression of anti-government protests. Now the list is being expanded to include death penalties and one indictment in response.
The EU has added seven more people to its sanctions list in connection with the brutal crackdown on anti-government protests in Iran.
According to a decision by the Foreign Ministers on Monday, those affected include the Attorney General of the province of Isfahan and the Deputy Judge and Advisor to the Criminal Court there. They are accused of being responsible for the trials of three protesters who were sentenced to death and subsequently executed in May.
Prosecution against prominent musician
According to EU information, the Advocate General has also filed charges against the prominent musician Tumaj Salehi for “doom on earth” because of his participation in anti-government demonstrations and anti-government activism. The rapper is currently awaiting his trial in a detention center under cruel conditions, it said to justify the new penalties.
In recent months, the EU has put more than 200 representatives of the government, parliament, the judiciary and the military on its sanctions list because of human rights violations in Iran. The punitive measures stipulate that assets held in the EU must be frozen. In addition, affected persons are no longer allowed to enter the EU.
The latest wave of protests in Iran began in autumn after the death of the Iranian Kurd Jina Mahsa Amini. The young woman died in police custody on September 16, 2022 after being arrested by the Morality Police for violating Islamic dress codes. Human rights activists estimate that hundreds of people have been killed since then.
