There are three letters that the whole country knows, without them practically nothing works in Germany. DIN standards regulate which fuel fillers and light bulb sockets people use, what baby pacifiers are made of and how high the stairs are. “Almost nothing in our everyday lives is not covered by standards,” is how the DIN Institute itself describes its role. The norms also often form the production standards for the economy. For more than 100 years, the institution’s power has continued to grow – the most famous standard, that for paper, was published back in 1922.
