Munich’s mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) has appealed to the federal government to reform the financing of long-term care insurance. In the Bavarian capital in particular, there is a growing risk that more and more people will end up on social welfare, “because the costs of care eat up their entire savings and income,” warned Reiter. He calls for “at least a real limit on personal contributions, but ideally the introduction of full nursing care insurance.”
The care market report, which was presented to the city council last autumn, documented the cost of care that has been rising for years: the average personal contribution for a single room in a fully inpatient care facility in Munich was already 3,150 euros at the end of 2022.
Due to legal changes and the tariff increases in the public sector that have been in effect since March, the costs for those in need of care are “expected to rise massively,” according to a statement from the city. “It is true that professional carers must be paid well,” said Reiter: “But it cannot be that these costs are then passed on to those being cared for. Long-term care is underfunded. This endangers the care infrastructure.”
