Diagnostic podcast: a dancer’s leg swells and hurts

“The diagnosis”
A dancer’s leg swells up and hurts – is there a blood clot behind it?

A young woman’s leg always swells up after dancing. A specialist discovers what a chafing point has to do with it – and can help.

A young woman comes to a vascular surgery clinic. She reports that her leg keeps getting fat after dancing. She regularly dances at a high level and travels to tournaments.

About a year ago she had similar symptoms: after a long trip, her left leg was swollen and painful. At the time, a vascular specialist discovered that a vein in his left leg had been blocked by a blood clot. This was probably due to the lack of exercise on the long journey and the use of the pill. In addition, the woman suffered from the so-called factor V deficiency, which additionally increases the risk of thrombosis. A drug was used to thin her blood and dissolve the clot.

Now she comes back to the vascular clinic with pain and a swollen leg. In this case, however, no clot can be found. However, during further thorough examinations, the doctor finds a particular abnormality in the pelvis.
