Werder Bremen’s media director Christoph Pieper explained how the SVW would like to save energy in the future and responded to the DFL’s call.

The energy crisis affects not only private households, but also companies. Bundesliga club Werder Bremen and the 35 other clubs in the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga have now been asked by the DFL to save between 15 and 20 percent energy – those responsible agree with the demand. This is how Werder saves energy.

“It makes sense to work with a target and to look at each location individually given the differences. We are trying to achieve the goal of 20 percent savings with the measures we have chosen,” explained Werder Bremen’s media director Christoph Pieper DeichStube: “We have a social responsibility and therefore want to do our part,” Pieper continued.

The fact is: Werder had major financial problems in the past due to the corona pandemic. That’s why the people of Bremen are also concerned about the price increases on the energy market. And what measures did Werder recently introduce?

“Among other things, we lowered the flow temperature of our heating system and tried to create better awareness and reduce individual consumption by raising employee awareness internally,” explained Pieper. According to the media director, Werder has also turned off the beverage refrigerators in the catering area and the air conditioning in summer.

And what about the floodlight? Would a later or reduced turn-on bring anything? Pieper replies: “Although the floodlights are very much in the public eye at the moment, it has to be made very clear that they are not one of our biggest consumers. We’re talking about 17 home games with around four hours of operation.”

And further: “We have already checked several times and found that investing in more energy-saving lamps would not pay off given the comparatively low consumption.”
