The German national soccer team is far from in shape for the World Cup – but the national coach still has time. During the test in Offenbach, the second row got tangled up against a World Cup outsider.

National coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg reacted to the weak performance of the German soccer team against Vietnam with a long list of deficiencies.

“One always expects a bit more,” she said at the press conference after the 2-1 (1-0) in the penultimate test match before the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand and managed a wry smile. In any case, the fact is: “We still have a lot to do on the training ground.”

Voss-Tecklenburg was visibly pissed off after the performance of the runners-up European champions against the Asian World Cup outsiders – even though there were many players from the second row in Offenbach on the pitch. Most of the aces from Champions League finalists VfL Wolfsburg around captain Alexandra Popp were rested, as were the five FC Bayern players who arrived later after the nomination dispute between the Munich club and the German Football Association.

“It was thrown together”

Voss-Tecklenburg was primarily concerned with the “basics: we all have different requirements.” Too hectic, too imprecise, not strong enough in one-on-one combat, too slow in many actions, too unsorted on the defensive – this is how the DFB players presented themselves exactly one month before the first World Cup game against Morocco. “It was certainly a bit thrown together,” said the national coach about her starting lineup – and about the state of preparation: “We’re maybe at 40 percent.”

In front of 13,652 fans, only Paulina Krumbiegel from Hoffenheim (3rd minute) and Janina Minge (80th) from SC Freiburg scored. In the end, it was thanks to first-choice goalkeeper Merle Frohms that Vietnam didn’t equalize.

After the last friendly against Zambia on July 7th in Fürth, Voss-Tecklenburg will name their 23-man World Cup squad. Before that, it goes to the second training camp in Herzogenaurach. “After three pitch units it was the first game. We can classify it, but we also know what we have to do on many levels over the next three weeks,” said Voss-Tecklenburg.
