National coach Hansi Flick has appointed three newcomers to his squad for his first international matches.

With eight familiar Bayern players, Marco Reus as a prominent returnee and three newcomers, Hansi Flick starts his first international matches as national football coach. The 56-year-old nominated a debut trio for the games on Friday (27.08.2021) in the Salzburg attacker Karim Adeyemi (19) and the defensive players Nico Schlotterbeck (21) from SC Freiburg and David Raum (23) from TSG 1899 Hoffenheim of the national soccer team in the World Cup qualification against Liechtenstein, Armenia and Iceland.
Florian Wirtz (18) from Bayer Leverkusen is the fourth professional in the 26-player line-up so far without an international appearance. “We think it’s a good, interesting squad with a good mix of experienced and young players,” said Flick.
18 EM participants included, Can not be considered
18 players who were still in the EM disappointment under Flick’s predecessor Joachim Löw in the summer are still part of the squad. Eight players, including the currently injured Mats Hummels (32) and his BVB colleague Emre Can (27), were not taken into account.
Kehrer, Dahoud and Baku will be there again
In addition to Reus (32), Thilo Kehrer (24), Mahmoud Dahoud (25) and Ridle Baku (23) will be the fifth U-21 European champion to return to the A-team, three players who had not recently been considered by Löw. Mario Götze (29) and Julian Draxler (27) are not among Flick’s first staff.
Return to the back four
The new national coach gave first insights into his plans. In contrast to the EM, Joshua Kimmich (26) will play six in the central midfield again. And after Löw’s unsuccessful attempt with the three-man chain at the EM, the four-man defense line will again be the preferred system for the defense. “That’s the plan,” said Flick before the meeting of the DFB squad on Sunday in Stuttgart.
