The new U21s are convincing at the start of the season and are making the European Championship disappointment from the summer at least somewhat forgotten. But the more important game is still ahead.

The successful restart of the German U21 footballers after the botched European Championship has impressed Coach Antonio Di Salvo provided relief.

“Wins are always good, that’s clear. Above all, it’s nice that we won this game through our content, through our focus on a stable defense,” said the 44-year-old after the 2-0 (0-0 ) against Ukraine in the first friendly match of the new season. A good two months ago, the coach and his team were eliminated from the European Championships in the preliminary round.

The newly formed team is now well prepared for the start of the European Championship qualification on Tuesday in Kosovo. “It’s even more important to get a good feeling. If you get confirmation in the game with a win, a good game, then that’s even better. We’re looking forward to the task in Kosovo,” said offensive player Nick Woltemade, who in Saarbrücken the 1-0 was prepared by Maximilian Beier (52nd minute).

Striker Tim Lemperle made it 2-0 (88th). “We have to get over the basics first. If we get them on the pitch, we have a good chance of winning against Kosovo,” said the Fürth man. Teammate Paul Nebel from Karlsruher SC said: “It’s obviously nice to start with a win. That makes everything a little more relaxed. Now we have to keep working and then put in a performance like that again against Kosovo.”
