After two defeats at the start of the season, Hertha BSC achieved the clear victory they had hoped for in the cup. A trainer’s son opened the scoring against the fourth division club Carl Zeiss Jena.

Hertha BSC avoided another setback after the false start in the 2nd Bundesliga.

The Berliners prevailed in the first round of the DFB Cup at regional league club FC Carl Zeiss Jena 5-0 (1-0) and celebrated their highest victory in the cup competition for 20 years. Palko Dardai gave the early lead with a header in the 6th minute. It was the first competitive goal for coach Pal Dardai’s eldest son after his return from Hungary this summer.

Tabakovic meets worth seeing

Striker Haris Tabakovic (47th minute) increased as another newcomer shortly after the break with an overhead kick. Marco Richter (49th/52nd) with a brace and Filip Uremovic (59th) boosted the result in front of 11,800 spectators in the sold-out Ernst-Abbe-Sportfeld.

The Berliners had last scored more than five goals in the 2003 cup in a 6-1 win in the first round at SSV Reutlingen. Last season, Hertha, as the Bundesliga club at the time, lost in the first round on penalties at second division side Eintracht Braunschweig. After being relegated to the Bundesliga, the Dardai team started the second division with 1-0 defeats against Fortuna Düsseldorf and Wehen Wiesbaden.
