All Sunday games in the DFB Cup are over. FC Augsburg is the third Bundesliga club out of the cup. FSV Frankfurt brought Hansa Rostock to the brink of defeat.
Second division leaders FC Hansa Rostock only have a bad one with great difficulty cup-Surprise averted. The North Germans came to a 3-0 penalty shoot-out at regional league club FSV Frankfurt on Sunday evening. After 120 minutes it was 1-1.
Hang Malik McLemore gave the Hessians the lead in the 29th minute in front of 7,374 spectators at the Stadion am Bornheimer. Serhat Güler (84th) equalized. In the nervous duel from the point, Hansa goalkeeper Markus Kolke fended off all three Frankfurt attempts and thus became the match winner for his team.

Loc Leipzig – Eintracht Frankfurt 0:7
Coach Dino Toppmöller’s successful debut in a competitive game at Eintracht Frankfurt quickly became a minor matter after firecrackers were thrown and the game was interrupted. Supporters of the regional league club 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig ensured on Sunday that both teams had to be sent into the dressing room for around 15 minutes in the final phase of the first round match in the DFB Cup.
The finalist from the previous season from Hesse won 7-0 (1-0) and progressed, but after that the main focus was on the chaos in the stands and the ugly scenes in the interior. According to TV images, pyrotechnics also flew from the home spectators’ area near their own fans in wheelchairs.
“Sad world,” said Leipzig coach Almedin Civa on pay-TV broadcaster Sky: “We’re preparing a huge party here and then there are some (…) who destroy everything.” A large police presence gathered during the break in the second half. Civa said there was “a huge blockade in society” and denounced “hate, hate, hate”. “The only thing that calms me down is that I’m convinced it’s the minority,” said the regional league coach. However, the majority “shut up”.
Frankfurt coach Dino Toppmöller also criticized the actions of parts of the Leipzig fans. “It’s never nice, overall it damages the club’s image and overall it’s not nice for football,” said the 42-year-old. The game was interrupted in the 73rd minute due to firecrackers and pyrotechnics being thrown from the block of the locomotive fans. Referee Michael Bacher sent both teams into the dressing room when the score was 3-0. According to the police, the firecrackers were thrown out of the locomotive fan block.
SpVgg Unterhaching – FC Augsburg 0:2

FC Energie Cottbus – SC Paderborn
After the botched start in the 2nd Bundesliga, SC Paderborn won the first competitive game of the new season in the DFB Cup. The East Westphalians won easily and easily 7-0 (3-0) in the first round at regional league club FC Energie Cottbus on Sunday, even without their injured newcomer Max Kruse. Düsseldorf’s André Hoffmann (41st) made the game exciting again with the second own goal of the day. Illertissen dominated the second half, but only Fortuna striker Christos Tzolis (90+1) scored.

TuS Makkabi – VfL Wolfsburg 0:6
Bundesliga soccer club VfL Wolfsburg didn’t show any weaknesses in the first round of the DFB Cup at Berlin’s fifth division club TuS Makkabi, the first Jewish club in the competition. FC Rot-Weiss Koblenz – 1. FC Kaiserslautern 0:5

In front of 10,176 spectators in the sold-out Oberwerth stadium, Terrence Boyd, Julian Niehues (35th), Boris Tomiak (43rd) and Kenny Prince Redondo (66th) scored a penalty kick for the favorite in the 19th and 90th minute had started poorly with two defeats.
Coach Dirk Schuster’s team had no problems in the duel with the fifth-rate Koblenz team. With 19 goals, the three HSV competitive games this season were all real spectacles. Essen, who were a worthy part of this cup fight on Sunday, were eliminated in the first round for the sixth time in the last seven participations. In 2021 they had reached the quarterfinals as a fourth division team.
Bakery Jatta used two gifts from Essen to take the lead twice (37th/54th minute), Robert Glatzel scored the third (66th). But Essen kept coming back through Torben Müsel (42′), Moussa Doumbouya (56′) and Lucas Brumme (83′). Only the 4:3 by Laszlo Benes (117th) brought victory and saved the HSV a penalty thriller.
Rostocker FC – 1.FC Heidenheim 0:8
1. FC Heidenheim easily made it into the second round of the DFB Cup. The Bundesliga promoted team won clearly on Sunday in front of 3,500 spectators at Rostocker FC and earned 8-0 (5-0).
A week before the start of the Bundesliga, Heidenheim’s coach Frank Schmidt fielded his supposed top eleven in the first competitive game of the new season. And the big favorite set the course for victory within nine minutes in Rostock’s Ostseestadion. Adrian Beck with a volley (9th minute), Tim Kleindienst with a brace worth seeing (12th, 15th) and Lennard Maloney (18th) gave the guests a 4-0 lead.
After that, the state cup winner from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania lost some respect, launched one or the other counterattack and defended himself on the defensive as much as possible. Nevertheless, new signing Eren Dinkci, who shot from close range (53′), Pieringer (72’/header) and Stefan Schimmer (86′) made it 8-0 for Heidenheim.
The Monday games in the DFB Cup
The first round of the DFB Cup will continue on Monday with four more games – three Bundesliga teams are in action. TSG Hoffenheim is challenged by third division club VfB Lübeck. Bundesliga promoted SV Darmstadt 98 at regional division club FC 08 Homburg (both 6 p.m. / Sky) and 1. FC Köln at second division club VfL Osnabrück (8.45 p.m. / Sky) are the favorites to play. Second division 1. FC Magdeburg has to go to third division Jahn Regensburg (6 p.m. / Sky).
After that, two more games are missing to finish the first round of the cup. FC Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig do not have to play until the end of September because of their Supercup duel on Saturday. On September 26, the Munich team will travel to third division club Preußen Münster, while defending champions Leipzig will play second division club SV Wehen Wiesbaden on September 27 to qualify for the next round.
