Third division team 1. FC Saarbrücken beat Bayern Munich in the second round of the DFB Cup. The former Bundesliga club will challenge the German record champions and record cup winners on October 31st or November 1st. The corresponding ball was taken from the drum in the Dortmund Football Museum by the 2014 world champion Shkodran Mustafi. It is the first competitive duel between both clubs in 30 years.
“The absolute blast” for Saarbrücken – fourth division club Homburg does not draw a Bundesliga team
“This is an absolute blast, the most difficult task,” said Saarbrücken coach Rüdiger Ziehl on Sunday on the ARD Sportschau, “a great opponent, a full stadium, we will try everything.” Defending champions RB Leipzig travel to VfL Wolfsburg, Borussia Dortmund host TSG Hoffenheim. The last remaining fourth division team FC Homburg didn’t exactly get a dream draw: they welcome the second division team SpVgg Greuther Fürth.
FC Bayern (at Preußen Münster) and Leipzig (at SV Wehen Wiesbaden) had only played their first round games this week due to their Supercup duel, and the draw for the second round was therefore delayed. The final will be played on May 25, 2024 as usual in the Berlin Olympic Stadium.
