After Borussia Mönchengladbach’s 2-1 (1-0) defeat in the DFB Cup match at SV Darmstadt 98, referee Robert Schröder apologized to coach Daniel Farke for a penalty he didn’t give.

“The referee apologized to us in the dressing room after the game,” reported the 45-year-old coach after the end. The referee did not decide on a penalty in the 52nd minute when the score was 1:1 when Marcus Thuram was first pulled by his shirt in the six-yard box by opponent Jannik Müller and then knocked off his feet with a tackle.

“We scored the equalizer we deserved, had the momentum on our side and could have gotten a clear penalty. In this phase the game would definitely have tilted in our direction,” said Farke. The referee Schröder let play on. There is no video evidence in the first two rounds of the DFB Cup. Darmstadt coach Torsten Lieberknecht agreed with his colleague: “You have to get the penalty kick.”
