Deutsches Theater Berlin: Three million in the red – culture

The Deutsches Theater Berlin is one of the most traditional and most generously funded theaters in the country. Now it has gotten into serious financial difficulties, presumably through its own fault. According to a report on the economic situation of the stages and orchestras, which the Berlin cultural administration presented to the House of Representatives at the end of March, the city’s largest spoken theater had a profit of 31.9 million euros at the end of the 2023 financial year despite subsidies of 31.9 million euros and its own income of 3.9 million euros a deficit of over three million euros. According to this report, the total expenditure overrun compared to the budget planning for 2023 was a good five million euros. This apparently completely used up the theater’s considerable reserves as well as special subsidies from the state of Berlin.
