The cable fire in Hamburg had nationwide effects on long-distance traffic. Now almost everything is running smoothly again.

After the serious cable fire in Hamburg, there was good news for train passengers on Monday: “Long-distance traffic in Hamburg started again this morning,” said a railway spokesman.

However, there may still be deviations from the timetable for individual trains. Passengers are therefore asked to inform themselves in the digital information media of Deutsche Bahn before starting their journey. At the weekend there were significant impairments in long-distance traffic, passengers nationwide were affected.

According to the railway, a 1,000-wire copper cable was damaged in a fire on Friday night, the repair of which was very expensive. According to the railways, all communication on this route between the signal boxes runs over this cable. This is used to control the switches and signals, for example.

On several popular long-distance routes, trains were canceled in some cases, and the routes on others were shortened. In some cases there were delays of several hours.

A spokesman for the Federal Police was initially able to rule out arson as the cause of the fire on Monday. “We have no evidence at all of external influence.” Instead, a possible technical defect or self-ignition is being investigated.
