When Harry met Sassy: How AI thinks a rom-com from the Sussexes could look

Where on earth is he? She looked at her watch for what must have been the tenth time. 15 minutes late to their blind date. This is not going to work at all. So much for Prince Charming.

But then, flustered, he appeared. Red-raced, he crashed into the seat in front of her. Through his cascading apologies their eyes locked and she melted into a smile. She liked him, she knew. She really liked him.

It is a story as old as time. Boy meets girl. They fall in love. Secure multi-million dollar Netflix deal.

Seven years later, and with a podcast series, tell-all memoir and a variety of documentaries under their belt, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are looking to leave ‘real life’ content behind them… it’s time to have some ‘fun’.

That ‘fun’, according to a source, would be their production company making more ‘feel-good TV entertainment’ such as romantic comedies.

The Sussexes’ have both previously admitted to being huge rom-com fans, with the Duchess confessing she’s watched the 1989 classic When Harry Met Sally at least ‘a million times’, and ‘all the Julia Roberts rom coms’ too.

Prince Harry revealed in his best-selling memoir Spare that he used to watch the hit 90s TV show friends too.

All perfect research, it would seem, for their new venture into rom-coms.

But what might a Harry and Meghan rom-com look like? How might some of those famous scenes from Notting Hill, or Love Actually look with a royal casting? A digital artist asked Midjourney AI to imagine it, and these are the results.

Notting Hill… or Nottingham Hill Cottage In many ways, Prince Harry and Meghan already fit the bill for the plotline of Notting Hill.

A superstar American actress meets a dashing Londoner – all you need to do is swap Notting Hill for Nottingham Cottage, and the rather disheveled book store owner for an English Prince.

Being such a huge fan of Julia Roberts, Meghan is sure to have watched Notting Hill numerous times and perhaps dreamed of her own British romance.

In the 1999 film, Julie Robert's character, Anna Scott, is left bemused when Hugh Grants character, William Thackery, chucks orange juice all over her

In Notting Hill, Hugh Grant's character famously meets the love of his life when he accidentally pours orange juice all over her. In this recreation of the scene Meghan Markle seems to take the spill much better than Julia Robert's character

Hugh Grants character William Thackery, famously bumps into Roberts character, Anna Scott, pouring orange juice all over her.

The AI has recreated this scene with Harry and Meghan playing the roles – but there are some differences.

Whereas Roberts’ character was left rather bemused after the incident, Meghan is portrayed as finding the accident hilarious.

The end of the film shows the couple married, expecting a baby and living in London – not so indifferent to how the Sussexes’ started their married life before up and moving across the Atlantic to raise their family in California.

When Harry Met Sally… or When Harry Met Sassy

It became an instant hit when it was first released in 1989, prompting a wide discussion of whether women and men can really ever be ‘just friends’.

Tracking the lives of two graduates Harry, played by Billy Crystal, and Sally, played by Meg Ryan, the film watches the pair navigate through their 20s and 30s before realising they were madly in love with one another.

It was quite the opposite of the year and a half relationship the Duke and Duchess had before their royal wedding in 2018, after dating in 2016, after meeting on Instagram.

Either way the royal couple look rather at home in this cramped American diner – although we can’t quite imagine them reenacting the ‘I’ll have what she’s having scene’.

Love Actually… or Royal Love Actually

Love Actually has become a staple Christmas film to many across the world.

There are a whole series of romances: the Prime Minister and his secretary, the writer and his Portuguese housekeeper, and of course the hopeless Brit who has to travel to America to find love.

Harry and Meghan’s love story could easily be woven into this matrix of romances.

The AI has reimagined them playing the part of The Prime Minister, played by Hugh Grant, and Natalie, played by Martine McCutcheon.

It has also reimagined the royals acting out the scene where Mark, played by Andrew Lincoln, tries to his best friend’s new wife Juliette, played by Keira Knightly, that he is in love with her.

Four Weddings and a Funeral… or One Wedding, a Funeral and a Coronation?

Four Weddings and a Funeral sees an English man fall madly in love with an American, set on returning across the pond.

The iconic scene of Hugh Grant, playing Charlie, and Andie MacDowell, playing Carrie, kissing in the rain has been recreated by the AI – although this time there is the edition of an umbrella.

The AI seems to have merged an advertisement for the film, where the actors are stood, laughing under a brolly, with the rainy scene.

While the royal couple cannot say they ‘only meet at weddings and funerals’, throughout their marriage they have attended a number of high end and royal nuptials, as well as sadly state funerals.

Sleepless in Seattle… or Sleepless in Sandringham

Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan were all the rave after their 1993 Sleepless in Seattle which documents a widowed father falling in love with a journalist.

Thankfully no tragic circumstances led to Harry and Meghan to meet, but the AI version makes the couple look very at home standing dramatically on top of the Space Needle, looking across the Seattle skyline.
