The New Mexico city where the first atomic bomb was tested looks set to see a huge influx of visitors following the release of blockbuster Oppenheimer.

In this episode, we unpack what to expect in Brussels this August as EU decision making grinds to a halt. Also, we explore how extreme weather in Europe is weighing against tourism demands, and how politicians are responding.
Host Suzanne Lynch is joined by Nicholas Vinocur, POLITICO’s editor at large, and EU politics reporter Gregorio Sorgi. They explain the European Commission’s “designated survivor” concept, which keeps the legislative body afloat thanks to a few (unlucky) commissioners stuck in the Berlaymont.
Perched in the French Alps at the foot of Mont Blanc, the iconic town of Chamonix confronts global warming by encouraging tourism professionals to adapt to changing conditions and promote local culture.
Chamonix is a pioneering place when it comes to mountain and alpine culture. Known worldwide for its glaciers and as the birthplace of mountaineering practised there since the 18th century, it was in this village that the first Winter Olympic Games were held in 1924.

Greece will grant tourists whose vacation was interrupted by the wildfires which devastated Rhodes a one-week free holiday, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said Wednesday.
“For all of those whose holidays were cut short as a result of the wildfires, the Greek government, in cooperation with the local authorities, will offer one week of free holidays on Rhodes next spring or next fall,” Mitsotakis told British broadcaster ITV, adding the island was now “back to normal.”

The United States on Tuesday sharply limited Hungary’s participation in its visa waiver program over security concerns regarding new passports issued between 2011 and 2020.
Under the American Visa Waiver Program, citizens of participating countries can travel to the U.S. for tourism or business for up to 90 days without a visa, and simply need a so-called Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA).
But starting Tuesday, ESTA validity for Hungarian passport holders will be reduced from two years to one,
As a family sat vigil over a coffin containing the body of an elderly relative, the wooded hills around their apartment building in Palermo burned from wildfires. Winds blew the blazes closer, torching cars, dumpsters, sheds and electricity poles. Then the flames licked the apartment building, forcing its inhabitants to flee.
“We wanted to leave the house, but then the flames were behind the door,” a resident told Live Sicilia television. She said she and her family wrapped their faces
As thousands of tourists have fled the flames devouring the Greek island of Rhodes, locals were left with scorched land, and the ashes of the cypresses, olive trees and pines surrounding their empty bars, shops and hotels.
Many fear their livelihoods have been shattered for now and perhaps for the future, if the visitors, a core source of income for the island, do not return.
“It was green, and now it’s black,” said George Tirelis, who manages some holiday villas
Politicians have a message for tourists who might be freaked out over roasting temperatures and hellish landscapes of roaring forest fires: Swallow your fears and keep enjoying your holiday.
In Greece, 20,000 people were evacuated from Rhodes over the weekend as fires engulfed parts of the island, and British Foreign Office Minister Andrew Mitchell said he “wouldn’t” travel there at the moment. But Greece’s Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni talked down the threat, stressing that only a “small part” of the

With missions to the International Space Station (ISS) now the norm and Elon Musk talking about going to Mars, it’s often hard to imagine that just 65 years ago no human had ever been to space.
For 300,000 years we walked the Earth but it wasn’t until 1961 that Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first person to escape the confines of our planet.
Now, five decades on, space tourism companies are springing up everywhere with promises to take ordinary
