Warning to holidaymakers as post-Covid travel boom sparks record spike in cases of parasitic worms

Holidaymakers were today warned about the dangers of parasites abroad after a record number of Brits were struck down last year.

A post-Covid travel boom to exotic destinations may be to blame, experts say.

Nearly 1,000 cases of travel-associated parasitic infections were detected in the UK last year, up from an average of 870 pre-pandemic.

Such illnesses include leishmaniasis, schistosomiasis and strongyloidiasis, which are spread by insect bites or parasitic worms.

Ethiopia declares state of emergency as regional violence spirals out of control

Ethiopia’s Council of Ministers is declaring a state of emergency in the country’s Amhara region after authorities pleaded for help as clashes intensify there between regional forces and the military.

The prime minister’s office announced the decision on Friday after the region’s leader said regular law enforcement was no longer able to contain the violence. The declaration needs approval from Parliament.

In a 59-page memo circulated internally just before New Year’s Eve, engineers detailed the grim numbers.
